Mary Cassatt Returns to the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco
Opening on October 4, 2024
Marvel at the rich colors and daring gestures of Mary Cassatt, one of my favorite impressionist artists whose paintings, prints, and pastels will be exhibited at the Legion of Honor in the first major retrospective on the artist in 25 years.
Too often dismissed as a sentimental painter of mothers and children, Cassatt (1844–1926) was in fact an Impressionist pioneer to uncover these poignant scenes of care, work, and respite. Cassatt was the only American to join the French Impressionists, first exhibiting with the group at Degas’s invitation in 1879, and quickly emerged as a key member of the movement. Alongside scenes of women at the opera, visiting friends, and taking tea, Cassatt produced many images of “women’s work” — knitting and needlepoint, bathing children, and nursing infants. These images suggest parallels between the work of art making and the work of caregiving. This exhibition is organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Fine Museum of Art of San Francisco in collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Book your ticket early before they are all gone!
