“The Space Command can confirm the destruction of the decommissioned Russian Resurs-P No. 1 spacecraft, which occurred in low Earth orbit on June 26,” USSPACECOM said in a statement.
It is noted that the satellite broke up into 100 tracked fragments. USSPACECOM does not see them as an immediate threat, but is monitoring them to ensure the safety of near-Earth space. The command notified commercial, government and partner organizations about the incident.
Resurs-P series satellites are Earth remote sensing satellites that are designed to monitor the Earth’s surface.
