Footage of a Russian commentator laughing at Bernardo Silva missing a penalty has gone viral online.
Manchester City were widely regarded as the favourites to win the Champions League this season, but on Wednesday evening the defence of their European crown was ended by Real Madrid.
After the two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final tie last week, the return leg at the Etihad Stadium was a much more one-sided affair.
After taking an early lead the Spanish giants sat deep and defended, but only allowed City to score once in normal time before standing firm in extra-time.
With the aggregate score locked at 4-4 after 210 minutes of football, the ‘modern clasico’ was decided by a penalty shootout.
Real Madrid won the shootout 4-3, with centre-back Antonio Rudiger scoring the decisive spot-kick to secure Madrid’s place in the semi-finals for the 12th time in 14 years.
The shootout could have turned out differently though had Bernardo Silva not made a mess of his attempt.
With City 1-0 up after Ederson saved Luka Modric’s effort, the Portuguese star placed his kick straight down the middle of the goal and straight into the hands of Andriy Lunin.
It’s rare that goalkeepers don’t dive for penalties, but Lunin took a gamble and it paid off big time.
His decision to do so might have been influenced by Madrid teammate and substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
For Madrid fans, neutrals or anyone that dislikes City, the sight of Bernardo’s cheeky effort falling flat was quite amusing.
It certainly was for one Russian TV commentator.
Footage has gone viral of the commentator bursting out in a fit of laughter when Bernardo’s penalty was saved, with him shouting: “Bravo Lunin! Bravo Lunin!”
City will now turn their attention to an FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea on Saturday.
