After Islam Makhachev’s (25-1) win over Dustin Porier (30-8) at UFC 302, talk of a possible rematch between Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan has already begun.
Arman is the No. 1 ranked lightweight and should face the champion sooner or later. But Makhachev dreams of the title of double champion and is looking towards the welterweight division.
At the press conference after UFC 302, Dana White spoke about Arman Tsarukyan’s rematch against Islam Makhachev:
“Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan in Russia? It would certainly be interesting, everyone would like to see such a fight. It should be done. But we said that maybe Islam would want to move to a heavier weight category. If I were him, I wouldn’t do that, I would have a fight with Tsarukyan first. I don’t know about organizing a fight in Russia,” said Dana White.
And Arman Tsarukyan addressed Islam Makhachev after the press conference:
“Congratulations Islam, but you don’t need to run to another division. Defend the title again against a real lightweight. I’m next in line.”
This was followed by a response from Islam:
“Tsarukian? I’m ready. Dana White has my number, just call me and give me a new challenge. But there’s no point in rematches, you always want a new challenge. But if Dana wants it, then okay.”
